Lots. Lots of fun. Go autocross now

Autocross isa nice, basic entry into driving a car hard. Much more fun is to go to a track night in america event. Find one near you at http://www.tracknightinamerica.com/ then go to autocrosses and rallycrosses to fill voids. Even “slow” cars can be good on the track. Just be prepared to stay in the throttle where the more powerful cars back out. I had no issues keeping up with traffic when I went for it. And hitting 120+ mph and pulling crazy Gs in turns was way more fun than any autocross. Even the ones where I was winning.

I’ve honestly sort of lost interest in autocrossing ever since I got hooked on Formula Vee racing. There’s no comparison to being on the track and auto-x. But then again, not everyone has a track around them that they can easily get on. Also, auto-x’ing is so cheap. I'll still do some events here and there since I got some guys in my club that go.

Autocross is almost necessary to learn the basics of car placement and physics. But at the sametime, track events are just on such a higher level. I did the Octane Academy for ST cars and doing those stunts like the 180 reverse handbrake turn and the 90 and 180 parking boxes alongside some track bombing and a figure 8 in an autocross? It makes a lot of these events look.......tame. Plus I hate how dependant autoX is on the whims of event hosts. I’ve been waiting for a few West Michigan events to come back......I;ve been waiting three years. I’m done. In many parts of America, I bet track time is more reliable to get. Not all, but quite a few. I feel bad for the rookies on this side who never got to learn just how to feel where your wheels are in their beater civics and impalas like I did. But it is what it is and I don’t run a car club so the next best thing is to head to the tracks to keep them open. It seems like if there aren’t many tracks, then there are autocrosses to fill the void. But I implore peopel to go to nearby tracks to help support them and keep them running. I was at Miller Motorsports Park for that driving school.......its a damn shame to see it close. I have such amazing memories from one of the most important days of my life at that place.

I have yet to schedule Octane Academy, I hear it’s great. Was meaning to look into scheduling one before it gets shut down. And I should do it soon because I’m a month away from having my car for a year. I learned bad habits from autocrossing, consistently fast in class and PAX but it did not translate well to the track.

The nearest circuits are like 3 hours away...
Plenty of opportunity for autox though. I'm going for my fifth week in a row this weekend

“Fast hands” is what you have. I had it too lol. All the more reason to step up once you’re comfortable in the car. I learned I can make the fiesta do a bit of a “kick”mid-corner with the right inputs for medium to low speed corners. It is rock solid on higher speed turns but to kill the understeer, if you can keep it steady until right before the apex and then give it just a quick jab more steering input, it will swing the back around, pivot at the apex, then adjust itself to be facing correct on corner exit. WHen I was constantly messing with the steering and touching and moving and using my “fast hands”, no way I could keep it composed under braking or turn-in enough for a smooth turn.

Not surprised that there’s a decent source of AutoX then.
But you drive a hatchback so........ROAD TRIP!!!!!! You have more than enough space for snacks and goodies for the road. Get a convoy going. You know you need to. Double points if you come to a west Michigan track so the FiST and the SoRS can duke it out. Although you’ll be in a different run group so......you know........on a hypothetical level they can duke it out!

The most repeated phrase at racing schools: “smooth is fast” lol. You have to be extra smooth in formula vee to keep momentum going through corners. I have yet to take my ST out. Got to upgrade the brakes before I do so I can go more than 3 laps before brake fade!
